1880: Frances Perkins, who would become the first female member of the United States cabinet when President Franklin D. Roosevelt appointed her as secretary of labor in 1933, is born in Boston, Massachusetts. She can be seen here behind Roosevelt as he signs the National Labor Relations Act in July 1935.
