1827: Lew Wallace, a Union general in the Civil War and author best known for his historical novel "Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ," is born in Brookville, Indiana. "Ben-Hur" became an instant bestseller and has been adapted four times for films, including the most famous version in 1959 starring Charlton Heston.
