The La Crosse National Weather Service (NWS) confirmed Tuesday morning that an EF0 tornado caused tree damage in the Trempealeau National Wildlife Refuge Monday evening.
"The radar data didn't really suggest much for rotation with the storms it was more of the ground truth reports, the spotters and then of course seeing the damage path that all kind of comes together and confirms that it was a tornado," says Todd Shea with the National Weather Service.
The EF0 tornado, which produces winds from 65 to 85 mph, had a path width of 35 yards and path length of over land of a 1/4 to 1/2 mile, according to the NWS Facebook page.
The tornado struck the National Wildlife Refuge from 5:20 p.m. to 5:24 p.m. The NWS says that does not include the time the tornado was over the Mississippi River.
Severe storms swept across the area Monday afternoon bringing with them large hail and even reports of at least one tornado.
Video shot by Winona viewer, John Redig, shows a funnel cloud on the backwaters of the Mississippi River.
Redig said it moved from the Minnesota side of the river to the Wisconsin side and it was on the ground for at least a couple of minutes.
There were no reports of any injuries and not much for damage from the storm either.
A News 8 photographer got a birds eye view from an airplane Monday night of a line of trees toppled over in the Trempealeau National Wildlife Refuge.
That's the same area where the tornado was captured on camera. "Something happened there that I've never seen before, it had two tails. On a funnel cloud, on a wall cloud, you normally have a tail which is the air rushing in to feed the cloud and there was two of them, and a little while later the funnel cloud dropped down, and the tornado touched down," said Redig.
The National Weather Service in La Crosse will survey the damage to determine the size and strength of the tornado.
Other areas saw ping-pong to golf ball sized hail from the storms.
