LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) -

The La Crosse Salvation Army and Catholic Charities are moving up their Back to School programs start date a week earlier than originally planned.

Registration for backpacks, clothing, and school supplies begins Monday, July 21. Catholic Charities will supply backpacks and school supplies to low income families. The Salvation Army will be providing each registered child with a new shirt, pants, and shoes with their Steppin’ Back to School program.

Applications are open to La Crosse County residents in kindergarten through grade 12 and are available at The Salvation Army, Catholic Charities and La Crosse County Human Services.

“For Families where money is extremely limited, the first day of school can be a nightmare. Parents wonder how they’re going to pay for everything, and kids worry about trying to fit in when they don’t have the same supplies as everyone else. When students can start the year with a new outfit and all the needed school supplies, they are just that much more confident and more likely to succeed in school,” The Salvation Army’s Public Relations and Development Director Julie Nelson said in a statement.

Both programs are in need for donations and sponsors to help the Steppin’ Back to School program provide outfits for children. Donations for backpacks and school supplies can be dropped off at either Catholic Charities or The Salvation Army.

Backpacks and clothing will be distributed on August 27 at Catholic Charities, 3710 East Ave. South in La Crosse.
