LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) -

Wisconsin's Department of Agriculture, Trade, and Consumer Protection is warning residents about a new scam that preys on people who may be grieving the loss of a loved one.

Scammers are sending people condolence emails, which appear to be from legitimate funeral homes.  The emails include limited information, saying only that a service will be held soon for a "friend."  The emails include a link for people to click if they want more details.

The link will direct your internet browser to a foreign website where a .zip file will automatically be downloaded.  If the .zip file is opened, malware will be installed on your computer.

"[Scammers] could get tax information, social security numbers, credit card information.  Really anything you have on your computer that's valuable to them," says Nat Wood with the Federal Trade Commission's Bureau of Consumer Protection.

Experts say if you get an email like this, delete it immediately.
