LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) -

Western Technical College is working to fight hunger with a new food shelf on campus.

The Cavalier Cupboard opened its doors to students for the first time Tuesday.

The college created the food shelf because of a survey a student did for a class project which showed a number of students on campus go without eating during the day.

After looking at the data, the student knew she had to do something to help her classmates. "This to me is something that is very near and dear to my heart. I had a lot of students that I wanted to help, but my pockets only go so deep and this is somewhere students can feel safe and know they can get help here," said organizer Lynda Smith.

The Caviler Cupboard is open every Tuesday and Friday from 2:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m.
