CLARK COUNTY, Wis. -

An 81-year-old man from Spencer died after his vehicle struck a train Tuesday morning in the Township of Unity.

The Clark County Sheriff’s Department said Charles S. Podbelsek was driving eastbound at 9:15 a.m. in a 1994 Dodge Grand Caravan on Century Road just east of Basswood Avenue when he approached a railroad crossing.

The investigation showed Podbelsk did not stop at the stop sign at the crossing and struck a southbound Canadian National train. Podbelsk’s van was thrown south of the crossing and landed on the roof, the sheriff’s department said. Podbelsek was ejected from the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The investigation continues. This is the second traffic fatality for Clark County in 2013.
