FAIRFIELD, Iowa (AP) -

Fairfield police say a man has died after being struck by a freight train traveling through the southeast Iowa city of Fairfield.

The Fairfield Ledger reports the man was hit about 4:15 a.m. Sunday by a BNSF railroad train within the city limits.

Fairfield Police Capt. David Thomas says it's unclear why the man was on the tracks. His name wasn't released until relatives could be notified.

Thomas says the train crew saw the man but couldn't stop the train in time to avoid him.
