Area mailmen are doing their part to help stamp out hunger this week.
The Letter Carriers Food Drive is one of the biggest food drives across the country. Earlier this week, mail-men left designated bags to be filled with non-perishable food items at your doorsteps, then came back today to collect them.
In 2013, more than 74 million pounds of food were collected nationally. Locally, food collected last year weighed in at more than 100,000 pounds, all thanks to community members and mailmen.
"The generosity in the local community has been absolutely wonderful. We have done well year to year,” said Tim Griffen, one of the drive’s organizers. “It fluctuates depending on what the economy is doing, but overall we do quite well, and it helps the folks in need."
If you’d like to participate in the effort, cash and check donations are also accepted.
