Madison police recommend charges in fatal Highway 30 crash

MADISON, Wis. - Madison police have recommended charges against the driver involved in a fatal car crash that killed a Cottage Grove couple.

Police said 25-year-old Brandon Ballweg was driving east on Highway 30 near Fair Oaks Ave. around 4:50 p.m. Feb. 12 when he lost control of his car, went airborne and landed on Kirk U'Ren and Jennifer Steiner's SUV on the westbound side of the highway. Jennifer died at the hospital Saturday. Her husband, Kirk, died at the scene.

Police said in a statement Sunday night Ballweg was being held in the Dane County Jail on tentative charges of second degree reckless homicide, three counts of second degree recklessly endangering safety and reckless driving causing injury.

Speed appeared to be a factor in the crash, police said. Two other vehicles were involved in the crash.

Steiner was 34 years old. The couple leaves behind twin sons Kayden and Grayson.

The couple were organ donors, and their donations will help more than 100 people.

A GoFundMe page set up to help the family has raised nearly $42,000 as of Sunday morning.
