Here are some travel tips to make your holiday travel less stressful this year
We are quickly approaching one of the busiest travel times of the year as millions of Americans start to head home.
In Wisconsin alone, about 1.8 million people are expected to travel this holiday season, with nearly 100,000 of them traveling by air.
Dave Friedman with Friedman’s Hobbit Travel in La Crosse gave News 8 some tips on what people can do ahead of time to make sure their trip home is a little less stressful this year.
"I think for people who are flying, they have to realize it is going to be very busy in the airports,” said Friedman.
If you add weather delays into your holiday plans, it is going to get even more hectic at the airports. Friedman says there are some basic rules that travelers can follow to make it easier for everyone traveling this holiday season.
First: Make sure you travel light.
“With this many bags out there, airlines can lose your bags. So I suggest you take a carry-on and have your immediate needs covered for like one or two days just in case,” said Friedman.
Second: Give yourself enough time to get to the airport and try to get there early.
Friedman said, “If an airline has open seats on an earlier flight, they might be more than happy to put you on a sooner aircraft to get you out of the way."
Third: If you know you are going to be unable to get to your hotel reservation or rental car company, let them know immediately.
"That way they protect your reservation for the next day. If you don't show up and they don't hear from you, they'll cancel it and sell it to someone else,” said Friedman.
Finally, if your flight is cancelled, be kind to those who are working and trying to help you.
Friedman said, "Kill them with kindness. They now have a very tough job to do, and they are not going to be responsive to you if you are yelling and screaming at them."
Friedman said the best thing you can do is plan ahead and have a great attitude.
"Something is going to go wrong, don't let it ruin your trip," said Friedman.
