LA CROSSE, Wis. -

The Red Cross is trying to prepare for a drop in blood donations.

The organization hosted a blood drive at its La Crosse donation center on Saturday.

Staff said the majority of their blood comes from high school and college blood drives.

When the school year ends, they lose about 80 percent of their donations.

Combine that with the increased demand for blood in the summer and Red Cross staff said they're banking on community members to meet the need.

"People are busy, they're out and about and they don't have time to see us. Obviously with everyone out there's more accidents and the higher need of it so we definitely need the supply," said donation supervisor Carrie Shea.

Shea said it only takes about an hour to give blood.
