Tips to stick with New Year's workout resolution

LA CROSSE, Wis. - Getting in shape is the most popular New Year's resolution, but it's one that most people won't stick with.

The La Crosse Area Family YMCA sees a big boost in numbers after the first of the year but after about six weeks things return to normal.

Y Wellness Director Lee Walraven says the decision to get in shape is more than working out; it's an entire behavior change. To be successful he says people need to change their habit and change their schedule to make time to work out. And most important is to start with a workout plan that you can handle.

"The worst thing you can do is try to come out, I'm going to go five times a week, I'm just going to knock it all out and we're going to make this big change cause you're going to burn, one you're going to get sore muscles you're going to burn yourself out and you're going to quickly not want to do it," said Walraven said.

Walraven recommends starting with just two days a week. Any more than that you could burn out and you won't see the results you want.
