More state residents attending UW-Madison

MADISON, Wis. (AP) - More state residents are attending the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Data from the university's Office of the Registrar shows that 3,837 members of this fall's 6,339 freshman class are from Wisconsin.

That's the largest number of state residents in a freshman class since 2001, when 3,947 students were state residents.

African-American, Hispanic or Asian-American students make up nearly 11 percent of the class, the largest percentage in the past decade.

The class also includes 1,159 first-generation students.

Total enrollment at UW-Madison this fall was 43,256 students, up from 42,820 last year. Non-resident students make up nearly 26.8 percent of the total undergraduate population.
