Judge won't lift no-contact order for Iowa suspect

DUBUQUE, Iowa (AP) - A judge won't let the mother of a 2-year-old Dubuque boy who died last year speak to the man accused of killing him.

The Dubuque Telegraph Herald reports that Judge Monica Ackley rejected a request by Kylee Vander Meulen to lift a no-contact order between her and her former boyfriend, Nicholas Reed. She had said she needs to communicate with Reed because she's pregnant with his child.

Reed faces first-degree murder and other charges in the November death of Vander Meulen's son, Bentley Randall. Reed has pleaded not guilty.

Authorities say Reed was baby-sitting Bentley while Vander Meulen was at work. She later took the boy to a hospital for treatment of submersion burns and head trauma.

Doctors say Bentley died of blunt force trauma to the head.
