County Board tours Associated Bank building

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) - Many County Board members are getting their first look at what could be their future home.

Members toured the Associated Bank building Thursday. Some board members had seen the inside facility, but most had not.

Following the tour, Board Member Peg Jerome said she is very impressed with what she saw. County Facilities Manager Jim Speropulos said the building ranks at the top of the list for a possible alternative to the current County Admin building.

However, the 57,000 square foot building is slightly smaller than what they need so the county will have to add on. They will also have to renovate the entire inside to fit their needs. "I think we're going to have to do some renovations to it to make it fit our departments," said Speropulos, "the building appears to be in really good shape but we've gotta do some updates and stuff to make it, make it last 50 years."

Jerome also says of all the alternatives, the Associated Bank building is the least expensive and best option. She says getting an up close look at the inside before making a final decision was important. "I think the more information you have the easier it is to make an informed decision," said Jerome, "I know that certain members of our admin team had already seen the building and it's just a nice opportunity for the rest of us to see the building also and get a feeling for what it's going to be like if this deal goes through."

Associated bank says the building is about four times bigger than they need and they are willing to move. But that is contingent on being part of the Lot C renovation, which the city council is still debating.

Last week, the city council voted to allow rezoning of the current County Admin building. That paves the way for the building to be turned into student housing.
