Area police officers honor those who died while in line of duty

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) - Police officers from communities across our area, along with family and community members, came together in West Salem on Thursday morning.

The purpose is to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice while in the line of duty.

"We want to remember our fallen officers, we don't want to forget them and have their sacrifice go in vain," said West Salem Police Chief Charles Ashbeck.

The event serves not only as a memorial, but as a message of brother and sisterhood between every department.

"Anytime that there's an officer that gets killed in the line of duty, it's like taking one of our own in a way from us," said La Crosse Police Chief Ron Tischer. "And it doesn't matter if they're from West Salem, La Crosse, Onalaska, we're all one big family and we need to support each other when those tragedies happen."

At 7 p.m., the La Crosse Police Department will host the 15th annual awards recognition ceremony at the Black River Beach Neighborhood Center, 1433 Rose Street in La Crosse. The public is invited to attend.
