LA CROSSE, WI -

The La Crosse Area Convention and Visitors Bureau wants to help make sure people in need are warm this winter season.

They are taking part in the "Big Bundle Up" campaign.

They are asking residents to drop off new or gently-used coats, sweaters, hats and other warm clothing.

The statewide program collected more than 17,000 items last year.

The donations started after Wisconsin and Michigan started debating which state looked more like a mitten. "It became this little tit-for-tat funny little competition thing that then the Michigan Dept. of Tourism and the Wisconsin Dept. of Tourism both turned into a collection of items for those in need," said LACVB Exec. Dir. Dave Clements.

The drive runs through January 3rd.

There will be a donation box located at the Convention and Visitor's Bureau office in Riverside Park.

All the items donated will be given to the Salvation Army.
