Northside Elementary in La Crosse is recognized for its work helping students beat the odds.
The school is classified as Title I since it has a high percentage of economically disadvantaged children.
The state superintendent presented the school an award Thursday for beating the odds, meaning students are finding success in the classroom.
The school's principal says things like matching instruction to children's needs, and including families in lessons, have been instrumental to the student's achievements. "What the staff did here is to take a look at the research of high-performing and high-poverty schools, and they changed things based on this research, and that's why I think we won this award," said Northside Elementary Principal Laura Huber.
The school also received a $500 grant as part of the award.
