LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) -

La Crosse's heroin task force is hearing from other communities that are dealing with the same problem.

The chief of the Green Bay Police Department spoke at the task force meeting Thursday. He says the key to solving the heroin problem is using a balanced approach.

The chief would like to see a greater emphasis on things like treatment for addiction, and a needle exchange to prevent spreading disease.

He feels police can work on the enforcement side of the drug problem, but the long-term solution is prevention. "Law enforcement can have a place in there, but it won't be to fill up jails. We need to treat these people in order to have an impact on the demand for the substance," said Green Bay Chief Tom Molitor.

The task force is made up of law enforcement and other members of the La Crosse community.
