LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) -

Fundraising for a project to put security cameras in downtown La Crosse is nearing its goal.

The La Crosse City Vision Foundation's Safe-Cam project will install 41 cameras downtown and make them available for police review 24-7.

They believe it will deter people from committing crimes and help the police solve them quicker.

The organization just passed the $300,000 fundraising mark, $50,000 short of its goal.

They expect to reach it soon. "I think this spring we'll start looking at equipment and getting ready for purchase of equipment. I see this system being installed some time this summer," said the chair of the Safe-Cam project Mike Keil.

He expects the police to foot the yearly upkeep bill once the cameras are installed.
