LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) -

La Crosse is joining just a handful of other Wisconsin cities that are making their Main Street, their main focus.

State officials have approved our city as the newest Main Street Community.

Wisconsin's Main Street program helps cities restore their downtown architecture, revitalize their neighborhoods and upgrade their buildings - all while maintaining the community's history.

La Crosse went through the program's vigorous application process this winter and received good feedback from the judges.

"We have a very vibrant city - in fact, one of the judges on the panel wondered why we were interested in being involved because we've already got a strong downtown,” said Robin Moses, executive director of Downtown Main Street. “I guess our answer was, ‘You can always do more, you can always do better.’"

La Crosse is one of just 36 Wisconsin cities who are part of the Main Street Community program.
