LA CROSSE, Wis. -

A 32-year-old La Crosse man has been charged with three counts of distributing heroin and cocaine, and one count of possessing heroin and crack cocaine with intent to distribute.

The indictment alleges that Eugene Shields distributed heroin and cocaine on April 5, 6, and 8 and possessed heroin and crack cocaine on April 8.

According to the criminal complaint, La Crosse police conducted three control buys with Shields, who police say is also known as "Big Country," at 2001 State Road. After the third controlled buy, La Crosse police arrested Shields.

Police found almost $10,000 in heroin, cocaine and marijuana at his apartment.

If convicted, Shields faces a maximum of 20 years in federal prison on each of the distribution counts, and a mandatory minimum penalty of five years and a maximum penalty of 40 years on the possession with intent to distribute count, according to the Department of Justice.

Shields also faces nine different drug charges in La Crosse County as a result of the raid.
