LA CROSSE, WI -

La Crosse's Hazmat Team has been forced to drop three members after a statewide cut in funding. Hazmat funding has been cut 15% statewide.

Three members of the Onalaska Fire Department have been dropped from the team.

The cuts also threaten the department's ability to purchase new apparatus and protective clothing.

The team doesn't just cover La Crosse Co., they support 8 other counties in the surrounding area. "I think the public has an expectation that because we're pretty much the sole source for emergency response in these technical areas that that's the reason that they look to La Crosse to fill these gaps in coverages," said La Crosse Fire Chief Gregg Cleveland.

The cuts have dropped La Crosse's hazmat funding from $119,000 down to $92,000.
