LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) -

The La Crosse Great Harvest Bread Company will hold a "Christmas in July" food and fundraising event to help restock the shelves at the WAFER food pantry.

WAFER was damaged from flooding from a June 29 storm.

Any customer that donates three canned goods on July 25 or 26 will receive a free loaf of the bakery’s Honey Whole Wheat bread. The donated canned goods will be used to make a “canned good Christmas tree” to display in the bakery. It will eventually be delivered to WAFER.

"We all think about giving food at Christmas and we think of giving food at Thanksgiving, people who don't have food, don't have food in July either," said Great Harvest Bread Company Owner Jennifer Williamson. "So for us Christmas in July was really getting people to connect that we need to give at more than just the holidays."

WAFER said this fundraiser couldn't have come at a better time. On top of losing some stock in the flooding, they're seeing a surge of families coming in this month.

"This month we're already at over 1,200 families," said WAFER Operations Manager Susan Clements. At this time, they're usually at 900 families.

The biggest needs right now at WAFER are soup, canned veggies that aren't corn, tuna and mac and cheese.

The Great Harvest Bread Company will offer several Christmas-themed treats during its Christmas in July event.
