LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) -

A joint effort to curb drinking and driving in our area has a successful first run.

The La Crosse County OWI Task Force recently formed. It's six law enforcement agencies and the county health department working together for the common cause.

They're also working on curbing other traffic violations such as speeding and seat belt use.

Last week, they had 15 officers out monitoring the major corridors in the county. They handed out 49 citations and 81 warnings.

Officers were out again Thursday night as the holiday weekend got underway.

"Big weekends like this or big events like this, people are more likely to get drunk and we just want the public to be safe," said La Crosse Co. Health Educator Maichor Lee.

The task force's deployments are funded by grants. They'll be out several more days through September.
