LA CROSSE, Wis. -

The La Crosse Co. Sheriff's Department recognized some residents Friday for their outstanding service to the community.

The department handed out 3 citizen appreciation awards.

Dr. Mark Mattison was recognized for donating veterinary care for the K-9 unit.

Marlis O'Brien from Mayo Clinic Health System helped train staff in CPR.

And Trent Nelson, Robert Wardell, and Jordan Freehill were awarded for their heroic rescue of a man from a burning truck.

"We can't be successful if we don't have citizens helping us to do our job, whether that's information or whether that's actually helping at a scene," said Sheriff Steve Helgeson.

The department also recognized three employees for their years of service.

And they gave a department commendation to Sgt. Mike Valencia and Deputies John Williams, Peter Sloan and Nate Cibulka for their rescue of a suicidal woman last December.
