LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) -

After more than an hour of deliberations, La Crosse's City Council approves a resolution to ask La Crosse County to merge the city's libraries into the county library system.

The measure was passed after extensive debate Monday night.

The city plans to keep both city branches open and would provide money to the county to help maintain those locations.

Mayor Kabat says merging the two systems would eliminate redundancies and give taxpayers better service for their money.

The city hopes to have the agreement in place by next July, but county officials have pushed for a longer timeline.
