LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) -

The Department of Public Works could be facing some big changes.

Director Dale Hexom is retiring at the end of the year, which is giving the city an opportunity to re-evaluate his position and re-shuffle the department.

Mayor Tim Kabat proposed a resolution earlier this summer that would not re-fill Hexom's job and instead spread the responsibilities out over various departments.

The changes were recommended for approval by the city's finance and personnel committee last week with an amendment that would add a transition team. Significant parts of the city code would also have to be re-done.

"There's something like 33, 34 references in various chapters of the code where the duties are spelled out, or the responsibilities of the director of public works are spelled out that would need to be changed," said Hexom.

The possible reorganization of the public works department is up for approval at the city council meeting on Thursday.
