What started as a week to celebrate the environment ends with a day to plant a tree.
Friday was Arbor Day and the city of La Crosse Park and Recs Department held a celebration at Myrick Park.
City officials, along with some local kindergarteners, planted a red oak tree, the first one they've planted on Arbor Day since 1997.
Forestry workers are trying to plant a wide variety after the Emerald Ash Borer led to the removal of hundreds of ash trees. "People are going to be losing ash trees in their yards, so we need to get the awareness out there that trees need to get put back in as soon as the ash trees are taken down," said City Arborist Wyatt Wolfe.
Wolfe also said plating a tree on Arbor Day is a tradition he's looked forward to doing with the city for the last 35 years.
