CLARION, Iowa (AP) -

Jurors have found an Osage teenager guilty of second-degree murder in the shooting death of his mother.

Jurors at the Wright County Courthouse in Clarion returned the verdict Monday in the trial of 14-year-old Noah Crooks. He was found not guilty of assault with intent to commit sexual abuse.

Crooks was charged with first-degree murder in the March 24, 2012, killing of his 37-year-old mother, Gretchen.

The Mason City Globe Gazette reports the panel had deliberated for more than 17 hours since Wednesday. They told a judge last week that they had been close to a hung jury.

Crooks was 13 at the time of the shooting. His attorneys argued on an insanity defense.
