A golden retriever in Vernon Co. survived nearly two weeks without food and water before being rescued.
Vernon Co. Animal Control Officer Seth Young got the call Thursday that a dog was found trapped in a metal culvert in the Town of Jefferson. He figured it was just another routine call before he learned the back story.
Young says the dog, named Mercedes, apparently went missing from her home the day before opening weekend of the gun-deer season on Nov. 22nd. The culvert were she was trapped was located right across the road from her home.
Young wasn't able to free Mercedes on his own so he enlisted the help of the Viroqua Fire Department. They brought in the jaws of the life to free the dog.
Young says Mercedes probably went into the culvert to avoid the wind.
He says Mercedes appeared to be physically uninjured and one of the little girls who owns the dog was so happy to have her back.
