A Marshalltown man awaiting sentencing for voluntary manslaughter now faces new charges following his testimony during trial that his drug use played a part in his actions.
The Marshalltown Times Republican reports that 30-year-old Jeremy Gartin has been charged with dealing drugs and two weapons counts.
Gartin was found guilty in December of voluntary manslaughter, abuse of a corpse and carrying a concealed weapon in the Oct. 1 shooting death of David Warnell. Warnell's fingers, teeth and patches of tattooed skin were removed from his body.
Gartin testified during his trial that the shooting was accidental and that he was high on methamphetamine when he and another man came up with a plan to remove parts of Warnell's body in an effort to keep it from being identified.
