LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) -

Local parents will have a tougher time making sure their child's car seat is installed correctly.

La Crosse County used to offer free, individual car seat checks, but a change in federal funding to Maternal and Child Health has eliminated the program.  It's affecting not just La Crosse County, but counties across the state.

Health officials are struggling with the change and are trying to keep this program going because they know it's important.  "We're really trying hard to try and meet the needs in the community," says Paula Silha from the La Crosse County Health Department, "because we know that nearly 80% of the seats that we check at a variety events as well as individualized appointments are used incorrectly."

There are still places that offer individual car seat checks.  They are the Onalaska and Holmen Police Departments, Pischke Motors and Agape Pregnancy Center.
