LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) -

City of La Crosse officials are hoping road work on Highway 33 won't turn an often rundown city street into a detour.

Highway 33, starting at 32nd street and heading east, is scheduled to go under construction for about six months starting in April. It's a Wisconsin D.O.T. project. That means the detour will take cars to the north side of La Crosse, then on multiple different county roads before getting back on the highway.

A shorter alternative would be Bliss Road, however the street has a history of problems and has a five ton limit. "We wanna preserve Bliss Road to the extent we can, fighting with Mother Nature at times with all the erosion and the like that does occur," said La Crosse Public Works Director Dale Hexom.

The city plans to up enforcement of the limit on Bliss Road during construction.
