Bird Watchers from around the area will be conducting an annual Christmas bird count this weekend.

Starting on Saturday, counters will be out in a 15 mile radius around the La Crosse County Courthouse.

They'll be counting how many birds they see and the different species. Everything is then compiled and saved.

After 114 years of the count, it's become quite the science project. "We've got quite a bit of history, so we can see how bird populations have fluctuated, how birds have moved through time, things like the Northern Cardinal when this started where not found in this area, now they're very common here," said Dan Jackson.
