LA CRESCENT, Minn. (WKBT) -

Each September Merchants Bank of La Crescent collects non-perishable food donations for the local food shelf, but this year they are requesting something a little lighter.

From now until the Applefest Parade, the group is accepting both non-perishables and monetary donations. During the parade they are also encouraging people to 'Give a Buck to the Food Shelf Truck' to help lighten the load from the parade to the La Crescent Area Food Shelf.

"As they come to the parade they've got their hands full of either their chairs or their blanckets or whatever to go to this and, 'Oh, I forgot my Food Shelf items,' or whatever, non-perishables, and so this way they can pass the cash on to us and we pass it on to the Food Shelf,” said Merchants Bank Investment Services Gary Beardmore.

To further encourage monetary donations, Merchants Bank is matching the first $1,000 donated during the Applefest parade. Also, if you bring donations to the bank you can be entered to win prizes from area businesses.
