LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) -

A UW-La Crosse fraternity is helping make our community a safer place to live.

Chi Phi Fraternity raised $4,000 back in April to give to the La Crosse Police Department. City officials approved their donation Tuesday. The money was raised at the 2nd annual La Crosse Violence Awareness Charity Softball Tournament. The tournament is in honor of Sara Hougom who was gunned down in her La Crosse apartment in 2012.

La Crosse Mayor Tim Kabat said the money will go to a couple of different areas within the department including its community policing program.

"The way it's set up is that they can utilize those funds, anything that's related to the community policing, so whether that's equipment or other expenses that they'll occur," said Kabat

Part of the money will also go to the department's newly created  Neighborhood Response Officer team.
