LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) -

It's official. Flu season has hit La Crosse.

Gundersen Health System confirmed the first case of influenza which is the first in La Crosse County this season.

Health officials say it's a good time to remind people that there's still time to protect yourself. "Once you've had the flu, that's when it's too late to get the shot, otherwise the influenza vaccine is the best way we know how to protect people against the flu," said Gundersen Infectious Disease Specialist Bridget Pfaff.

Health officials are hoping for a much milder season than the outbreak we saw nationwide last year.

Gundersen says there's plenty of vaccine available and it takes about two weeks before fully working.
