Your sidewalk isn’t the only thing that should be cleared of snow this winter.

The La Crosse Fire Department asked residents to keep their fire hydrants clean, as well. Hydrants buried in the snow can make it difficult for fire trucks to get to them in the case of an emergency.

People with hydrants in their yard should clear at least three feet around them. Residents should also clear a path from the street to the hydrant for easy access during a fire.

"That's our way to establish a water supply during a fire,” said Lt. Jason Herbold. “We do carry a certain amount of water on the fire trucks on themselves, and we need to establish a water supply for additional water to our fire trucks, so it's important we're able to hook up that supply line as quickly as possible."

The city of La Crosse has about one hydrant per block.
