LA CROSSE, WI (WKBT) -

This weekend, we'll turn the clocks back for the end of Daylight Savings Time.  It's also a good reminder to check your smoke detectors.

The batteries should be changed twice a year so when you change your clocks, change your batteries. The detectors should also be tested at least once a month.

The Onalaska Fire Department says the detectors are important because they are the first and often the only line of defense against a fire in the home.

"That's your nose at night. Smoke does not alert individuals to a fire in your home, it actually, from causing the biproducts in carbon monoxide, causes them to go into a deeper sleep, so make sure they work," said Onalaska Fire Chief Don Dominick.

The chief says it's also a good idea to have a home escape plan and practice it as a family.
