With the recent weather, some of you may be dealing with standing flood water around your house and experts want to remind you to be careful.

Standing water is a breeding ground for mosquito and illnesses, so if you can, try to avoid it.

But if you have to be around, there are some things you can do to keep yourself safe: Wash your hands thoroughly and cover any open wounds with waterproof band-aids.

If your clothes come into contact with the water, make sure you wash it in hot water so it kills any contaminants.

One RN said it's also a good idea to check in with your doctor.

"You want to make sure you are up to date on your immunizations if you are going to be around it, check to make sure you are up-to-date on your T-DAP especially," said Traci Kokke, an infectious disease RN with Mayo Clinic Health System.

You also want to make sure you disinfect anything that comes into contact with the standing water.
