Several former inmates say illegal drugs and disrespect are commonplace at the Marathon County Jail where a guard was brutally attacked in March.

The inmates talked to an independent panel which will make recommendations on solving problems at the jail. The operation has been under scrutiny since corrections officer Julie Christensen was critically injured by an inmate. A second guard was also injured, but not as severely.

Stephanie Grosskopf served a year in the jail and told panel members that illegal drugs are easily smuggled inside by inmates temporarily released for work, school or child care.

Daily Herald Media says recent jail inspections reports from the state Department of Corrections say a lack of strip searches of Huber inmates is a major security issue at the jail.
