Temperatures will start to drop soon and officials in La Crosse County want to make sure everyone will be able to stay warm.

The federally-funded energy and weatherization assistance program is now underway.

The program helps low-income households with heating and electrical costs during colder months when heating a home or apartment might be necessary.

Every year, the program helps about 4,000 households in La Crosse County keep the heat on, but some conditions do apply.

"What we look at for eligibility is we look at the three months' income prior to the month of application and we use gross income, and it has to be under 60 percent of the Wisconsin median income," said  La Crosse Co. Economic Support Supervisor Tom Miller.

The energy assistance program began earlier this month and runs until May 15th.
