Electrical issues remain one of the top causes of house fires in the U.S.
A new report from the National Fire Protection Association says they account for 13% of fires. That's about 44,000 total across the nation. And the damage from those fires add up to 1.5 billion dollars in damages.
Local firefighters say in our area the biggest concern is residents misusing their electrical setup. "Generally your wiring in your house is going to be pretty safe, it's when we get human intervention and people who don't really understand what they're doing who want to try to alter their wiring in some way shape or form, and that's where we usually get a fire," said La Crosse Fire Dept. Division Chief Craig Snyder.
Snyder says it's also important to only use extension cords and surge protectors as temporary fixes.
If you need more outlets, he recommends hiring a certified electrician to add more.
