Local families walked at Memorial Football Field in Sparta on Friday night to help others in the fight against cancer.
It was the 13th year of the Sparta Area Cancer Support Walk.
For several hours, people walked around the marked area and participated in various events to raise money. All of it stays in the Sparta-Cashton area.
Last year the event raised $86,400 and helped more than 400 families. Organizers are hoping to raise $100,000 this year.
"Any family that has been hit by cancer is really going through a real trial financially and we're a group of people who really care, we take care of our own, we're, as our shirts say, neighbors helping neighbors," says Karen Edwards, president of SACS.
Edwards says this is the first year she can remember where luminaries for survivors outnumbered those in memory of someone.
