Des Moines residents will have a chance to take a look at a new design for Walnut Street through downtown.

KCCI-TV reports the city of Des Moines and Downtown Community Alliance will display the final streetscape concept for Walnut Street at a public meeting Monday from noon to 1:30 p.m. at the main library.

The effort included a retail market analysis that found a need for 225,000 square feet of retail and restaurants in the city's downtown.

The Walnut Street plan included a review of bike lanes, traffic flow and parking. Proposals include urban gardens and art.

City officials say construction of phase 1 of the project is expected to begin in spring 2014.
