HOLMEN, Wis. (WKBT) - What started out as a typical morning waiting for the school bus, almost turned into every parent's worst nightmare.
A man attempted to abduct a child Monday morning near Western Avenue and Mallard Drive in Holmen, according to Holmen police.
The man attempted to pull an 11-year-old girl into his vehicle shortly before 8 a.m., police said. The girl was able to fight the suspect off and get away.
"I can't believe it. I can't. That's for a bigger town, not little Holmen," said one concerned resident.
But if one thing holds true, the size of a community doesn't exactly make it immune from danger.
"You know it doesn't matter if you're in a town of a 100 or out in the middle of no where, you know it can happen," said Chief Shane Collins.
According to police, this is the first reported attempted abduction in the area since 2002.
And they say while they're thankful the child was able to get away, things could have ended differently.
" I guess nobody's to blame but like I said sometimes parents have to be a little bit more proactive and and keep an eye out on your children and make sure they get to the places they need to be and be safe," Collins said.
The police department is now actively searching for the suspect and say the fact that he's in a vehicle, makes their job more challenging.
"These cases are difficult and if he's in a car he's moving, I guess if I was thinking like a criminal and I tried to do something like this and it failed I'd be getting the heck out of here so for me I think he might be out of the area."
Authorities asked anyone near Western Avenue, Lilac Lane, Starlite Avenue or Mallard Drive who has a surveillance camera to check the footage for the vehicle, an olive-green, four-door sedan with rust around the wheel wells and a silver grill.
The back windows are tinted and the front license plate starts with the letter "B". There is no back plate. Other features include silver duct tape around the driver's side mirror and diagonally across the upper left corner of the back window. The victim also noticed a dent in the driver's side rear quarter panel.
According to the victim, the man was short and stocky, approximately 5 feet, 5 inches tall, with a dark complexion, a large birthmark above his upper lip, a large, flat nose and large lips with a cut on the lower lip and stubble under lower lip. The man also has a scar on his right forearm on the outside of his wrist and a long, bloody cut on his left thigh.
The man was last seen wearing a black hoodie sweatshirt with white wording across the upper back, light blue jeans with tears in both legs, dark colored boxers that are visible above his jeans and a brown belt. He also wore reflective sunglasses with black frames, black boots and black gloves.
Anyone with information is asked to call Holmen police at 608-526-4212.
