LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) -

A major re-organization is coming to La Crosse's Public Works Department.

Director of Public Works Dale Hexom is retiring at the end of the year. Instead of hiring a replacement, La Crosse's city council voted Monday night to dissolve his position and spread those responsibilities across the engineering department.

Mayor Tim Kabat has said the move will help eliminate some redundancy at City Hall and help the streets and engineering offices operate more efficiently.

A transition committee will also help in the process of eliminating the position. The council approved the resolution on the condition the head of the committee will serve as interim director until the position is dissolved.

Hexom announced his retirement from the city in July.
