Company wants to open union contract talks
Oshkosh Corp. wants to open contract talks with its union members as it makes a bid on a defense contract.
The military truck builder says it needs to cut costs to beat other competitors for the contract. Oshkosh wants to extend the current union contract with United Auto Workers Local 578 by another five years. The company is hoping to win a contract to build a tactical vehicle for the Army and Marine Corps beginning in 2016, about the time the current union contract expires.
The union is scheduled to vote Wednesday on whether to allow the union's bargaining committee to discuss the contract extension. WLUK-TV reports company officials say an extension would lengthen the contract to 2021 and preserve jobs in Oshkosh.
